2009 Barrington Hills Roads & Bridges IDOT Information

IDOT CLAIMS PROCEDURES

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has developed procedures for the submittal of claims for property damage to vehicles while traveling on highways under the jurisdiction and maintenance of IDOT such as County Line, State Rt 68, State Rt 62, State Rt 59, and State Rt 25. IDOT can not assume liability/responsibility for circumstances beyond its control, including, but not limited to:

  • Weather related events and conditions (ice, snow, flooding, etc.)
  • Damages caused by other motorists/vehicles
  • Unreported road debris or conditions

Can All Claims Be Filed With IDOT?

Damage claims because of highway problems or defects not under the jurisdiction of IDOT should be referred to the government agency that has charge over that roadway. Other government agencies may have different reporting and handling procedures. For more information, you should contact the specific city, county or Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.

How Do I Report A Condition And Obtain An IDOT Claim Form?

Please report the incident and your claim directly to the district claim office so that we may made expedite our response to you. A Claimant's Report of Property Damage form is not on this website. It must be mailed to you from the district claim office responsible for investigating the claim. A district map is available (click here) to direct you to that office. See map for example: Counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will are handled by the District 1 Office, Schaumburg (1-847-705-4401). If you are unable to determine the incident location, please feel to contact the Bureau of Claims, Springfield, at 217-782-6263.

Will My Claim Be Paid ?

The Department evaluates each claim based upon strict negligence and liability standards established by the Illinois Court of Claims. Those standards hold that the Department is not a general insurer of motorists traveling State highways and in order to be liable for damages, the Department must have prior notice of a condition and be allowed an adequate length of time to remedy or repair the condition.
Notice is a pre-requisite that cannot be waived. The Court also considers availability of resources and emergency situations such as snow and ice control, severe weather, flooding, etc. in extending the required response time.

Upon return of the claim form and required documents, a claim number will be assigned and our investigation will begin. Acceptance of the claim form is not a guarantee that the claim will be paid. Each claim is reviewed individually and is accepted or denied based upon the facts and circumstances related to that claim. While every effort will be made to expedite the processing of your claim, due to heavy volume, it will likely take 120-180 days to issue a final written determination. Please contact your insurance agent if the damage requires urgent consideration. The insurance company can arrange for repairs and present a claim to IDOT on your behalf.

Birth of a Pot Hole

Step 1 - Potholes begin after snow or rain seeps into the soil below the road surface.

Step 1

Step 2 - The moisture freezes when temperatures drop, causing the ground to expand and push the pavement up.

Step 2

Step 3 - As the temperatures rise, the ground returns to normal level but the pavement often remains raised. This creates a gap between the pavement and the ground below it.

Step 3

Step 4 - When vehicles drive over this cavity, the pavement surface cracks and falls into the hollow space leading to the birth of another pothole.

Step 4

2008 Road Program

Beside the general maintenace of pothole, this year, Oak Knoll Road will be resurfaced. The work is expected to begin after the bid process in mid-June; with projected completion in September. Affected residents will receive information from the Village containing details about the project.

Another project in the 2008 road program is the replacement of the culvert on Algonquin Road aka Plum Tree west of Braeburn Rd. This work is anticipated to necessitate closure of a section of Algonquin Road for approximately a two week period, so a detour route will be planned. The work may be begun towards the end of June. Please watch for and obey the road closure and detour signs in this area.

The Village Engineers are also analyzing the work needed to address the storm water drainage issues along Ridge Road and River Road.

Throughout the season if there are items of interest or concern, please use the contact links on this page.
