Nicor is currently working on a project at the intersection of Plum Tree and Ridge, which is expected to be completed by Wednesday, August 13. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and obey flaggers while traveling through this intersection.
Seasonal Posting Explained
On an annual basis, the Village lowers the load limit on all Village-maintained roadways to 10 tons (gross weight). This weight restriction goes into effect in the early spring when rising temperatures results in a loss of frost penetration and thus high moisture contents in the base of local roadways. This condition leaves Village roads susceptible to damage by vehicles of this weight class.
This year the seasonal load limits went into effect on March 17, 2008. The length of the closure will be determined by the rate at which the moisture created by the thaw dissipates and the road subgrades become adequately supported. Typically this occurs in early May, but can vary depending on the amount of precipitation and the predominant weather patterns that occur in the month of April.
2008 Road Program
Beside the general maintenace of pothole, this year, Oak Knoll Road
will be resurfaced. The work is expected to begin after the bid
process in mid-June; with projected completion in September. Affected residents will receive information from the Village containing details about the project.
Another project in the 2008 road program is the replacement of the culvert on Algonquin Road aka Plum Tree west of Braeburn Rd. This work is anticipated to necessitate closure of a section of Algonquin Road for approximately a two week period, so a detour route will be planned. The work may be begun towards the end of June. Please watch for and obey the road closure and detour signs in this area.
The Village Engineers are also analyzing the work needed to address the storm water drainage issues along Ridge Road and River Road.
Throughout the season if there are items of interest or concern, please use the contact links on this page.
Field Notes
Algonquin Road Culvert Replacement- The closure and detour routes are in effect, and demolition of the existing structure is in progress. Guardrail is being removed, and the existing structure will be removed either today or tomorrow. A dewatering well has been created on the south side of the road, and a rip-rap check dam has been installed on the north side to filter the water before it continues downstream. Work Started

Season Road Posting March 17, 2008
The office of the Village Engineer has completed a review of the extended forecast of overnight temperatures above freezing and believes that the upcoming thaw will lead to the rapid loss in frost under the pavement. This condition leaves Village roads susceptible to damage by vehicles of the regularly permitted weight class. Beginning on Monday March 14th, the gross weight of Village roads will be limit to vehicles less than 10 tons. All overweight permits will be suspended and no new ones issued by the Village. The length of closure will be determined by the rate at which the moisture leaves the sub grade.
The Village Engineer will continue to monitor the surface of Village roads and will notify the office of the Village Clerk, as linked through this web site, of any change to the schedule. View the Village Engineer's report (pdf).
Seasonal Road Posting
The Village Engineer has been monitoring the weather projections for the next two weeks in anticipation of the seasonal posting of reduced load limits on Village maintained roads. The present limit of 18 tons is reduced to 10 tons and all existing overweight permits are suspended for the duration of the posting.
The Village Engineer anticipates the reduced load limits would take affect on Monday March 17, 2008 if the overnight low temperature continues its steady climb above freezing and the current conditions of the road surface evidence of thawing, otherwise known to most drivers as potholes.
The Village Engineer will continue to monitor the forecasts as linked through the Village web site and will notify the office of the Village Clerk of any change to the schedule.
