Riders and Drivers Caution SignsEquestrian Warning Sign

As more common along roadways through areas with active equestrian trail riding, caution signs can be seen to alert the driver. The Village posts such signs where through traffic enters the local roadway and drivers need then to be alert to a change in circumstances and conditions. Safety and attention are the watchword whether driving in an urban or rural area.

Road Construction Continues

The Board of Trustees upon the recommendation of the Roads & Bridges Committee awarded the culvert replacement program for 2011 to Copenhaver Construction of Gilberts, Illinois. Work on various Village roads will be underway through September. Please excercise care through these or any roadway construction zone.

Otis Road Open 7/29

Drivers on Otis road should should find the CN/EJ&E crossing open to through traffic. Train horns do not sound at this crossing. Signage, gate arms, flashing lights and bell are warnings. Please excercise care on this and any other rail crossing as it is said, in a colision, the train always wins.

Rain Rain Go Away

Storms helped boost July 2011 into second place among wettest Julys of record. The official rainfall total at O'Hare airport stands at 9.04 inches. The wettest July in Chicago occurred way back in 1889 when 9.56 inches were officially recorded. Being only .52 inches shy of the record with one week remaining in the month, it is very possible this month may turn out to be a record breaker.

Last year, July had accumulated 8.84" rainfall making 2010 the fourth wettest on record.

Summer Temperature Experience

Conventional wisdom is a day of 80 degrees or higher is Summer temperature. Using records from Midway Airport, excluding the Lake effect, Chicago averages about 85 days a year when the temperature is 80 degrees or higher.

The number of days has varied from as many as 108 days in 1991 to as few as 56 days in 2009. The longest string of 80-plus--degree days is 42 from June 27 to August 7, 1955 as well as known as the hottest Summer on record.

Tempertures of 90 degrees or higher happen an avervage of 23 days as repoprted at Midway each Summer and 17 days at O'Hare. Temperatures of 100 degrees or higher occur about one year out of three and historically reported by decade as 1 day in 2000's, 7 days in 1990's, 14 days in 1980's, 3 days in 1970's and 1 day in 1960's.
