Recycle What? Where?

Four Steps On The Green Path

First, REDUCE

Buy reusable items; conserve water and energy. According to Energy Star, replacing just one inefficient light bulb with an energy-efficient one in every American home would save at least enough energy to light three million homes for a year and prevent nine billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to taking 800,000 cars off the road per year.

Tip. The easiest way to ensure that an energy-efficient light bulb is up to the governmental standards for efficiency is to look for the Energy Star label.

Second, REUSE

Use it up! Donate!
Americans generate 13 million tons of textile waste in 2010 of which 85% or 11 million tons was landfilled or incinerated.

Tip. If you can't find a recycling program or charity to take your old textiles, ask local businesses like cleaning companies, bike shops and mechanics, if they can use your old textiles as rags.

Third, RECYCLE

Many items are recyclable, from electronics to their original containers.

Tip. There’s an app iRecycle for iOS, iPad, & Android.

Fourth, BUY SMART

Buy recyclable products for home and office made from recycled materials and close the recycling loop.

Tip. Local services and recycling businesses are found in 2012 Green Guide for McHenry County and Kane County.
