IMPORTANT Note On the Application Process
One of the real frustrating parts of the building application
process comes when an applicant responds to a request for certain
information and believes the application submission is then complete.
However, it is often necessary later to provide even more information
based on the review by the Building Department of the initial
documentation submitted. Incorrect or incomplete information can
incur delay or worse, rejection of the application. Therefore,
it is important for the applicant and his or her consultants to
keep in touch with the Department (847-551-3003 or email) throughout the
entire permit process and even through construction. Please review
this web site for detail requirements.
General Information
- Office Hours: Monday
through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the Village Hall. Please
direct questions, applications, submittals and inspection requests
to the Building Officer between the hours of 9:00 AM
to 1:00 PM (847/551-3003).
- Building Permit Documentation requirements:
See attached sheet for required documentation to be submitted.
No construction work shall be started without all applicable
permits issued and all fees paid.
- Building Permit Fees:
| (A) Single Family Residence (except Plumbing): |
$ 1,250 for 2,499 sq. ft. or less
$ 0.55 per sq. ft. for 2,500 to 4,999 sq. ft.
$ 0.70 per sq. ft. for 5,000 to 7,499 sq. ft.
$ 0.85 per sq. ft. for 7,500 sq. ft. or more

- Overweight Permit: An Overweight
Permit is required if vehicles over 36,000 lbs. gross weight
must travel on roads maintained by the Village. Overweight
Permit fees (non-refundable: $50 plus $0.20 per sq. ft.
of new construction. WARNING –
In general, Overweight Permits are voided during March, April,
and May. Since this may halt construction progress, please schedule
accordingly.
- Call J.U.L.I.E. at 1-800-892-0123.
Notify J.U.L.I.E. 72 hours prior to the start of work to mark
utility locations.
- Inspections: Please allow
twenty-four hour notice for all inspections. See attached
sheet for the inspections required. Scheduled Monday through
Friday, 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Please leave a phone number so inspector
can confirm time.
- Percolation Tests / Septic Systems:
All percolation test witnessing, septic system plan approvals,
and installation inspections are done by the Village of Barrington
Hills. See informational sheets at Village Hall or contact Building
Department for further information.
- Open Burning: Only “landscape
waste” and “untreated wood” may be burned.
On-site supervision is required at all times.
